On a sunny day this month, start weeding. The weeds are easy to pull from the ground at this time of year because the soil is moist and they are easy to get to with most plants only waking up for Spring. Weeding now will pay dividends later, preventing the weeds from extending their root systems and/or setting seed.
Dig beds now for annuals to be planted in a month or two. Incorporate as much organic matter as possible to open up the soil and increse drainage and water retention. Apply a general fertiliser a couple of weeks before planting - apllied too early, a generalk fertiliser such as growmore will be wasted.
Established perennials which have been growing undisturbed for three or more years should be lifted from the ground and divided - this will encourage more vigorous growth and flowering. Dig up the root clumps, keeping as much soil on them as possible. If it is possible, use your hands to part the clump into three roughly equal portions - if the roots are very tough, cut them apart with a spade. Place them back in separate planting areas (or your friends may be grateful for one part), fill in firmly with soil and water well.
