Prepare Your Garden Before The Holiday

Many of us go on holiday when the garden is at it's best and the chances of hot, dry weather are at their highest. Don't despair, with a few simple preparations, you can avoid returning to a dried up shriveled garden!

A few days before the holiday, try and arrange for a neighbour or friend to visit during your holiday and water any particularly valuable plants. Make sure that they know where to find the hose and leave it attached for them.
During the week before the holiday, concentrate on dead-heading flowers. On the final day before the holiday, dead-head any flowers which look unlikely to last the week.

The day before the holiday, water everything thoroughly. This may take some time because everything should be soaked through. Feed any potted plants with a dilute feed.
Check all plant supports and replace or mend any that look unsound.
As near to the holiday as possible, mow the lawn.
Move all potted plants and containers to a cool, shaded area of the garden
Enjoy your holidays and forget about the garden - you can't do anything more until you return!
