Clematis Large Flowered Late

VARIETIES OF EARLY LARGE-FLOWERED HYBRID CLEMATIS 
All the Hybrid Clematis flowers were bred from three Japanese imports in 1836 to 1860 - Clematis florida, Clematis lanuginosa and Clematis patens. Theses hybrids come in delicate shades of pink blue and mauve, some vividly striped.

The early hybrids described below flower in early summer providing a blast of colour before many of the annuals are in full-flower.

Name: Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' (pronounced Chumly)
Hardy: Fully hardy
Height: 3 metres (10ft)
Flowers: RHS Award of Garden Merit. Bred by Charles Noble, England in 1873.  Very large (up to 20cm / 8in) flowers bloom on in late spring and late summer. The flowers of Mrs Cholmondeley are a delicate pastel blue
Leaves: Lightish green
Position: Full sun or semi-shade.

Name: Clematis 'Blue Ravine'
Hardy: Fully hardy
Height: 3 metres (10ft)
Flowers: Bred by Conrad Eriandson, Canada in 1978. Violet blue flowers open in late spring and again in late summer. The flowers span 20cm (8 in) with central dark red stamens.
Leaves: Lightish green
Position: Full sun or semi-shade.
Pruning: Type 2

Name: Clematis 'The President'
Hardy: Fully hardy
Height: 3 metres (10ft)
Flowers: RHS Award of Garden Merit. Bred by Charles Noble in 1876, clematis 'The President' is a hybrid between C. x jackmanii and C. patens. The  deep purple flowers (do not easily fade in the sun) are 15cm (6in) with silver on the reverse and reddish-purple stamens.  Attractive wispy seed heads after the flowers fade.
Leaves: Lightish green
Position: Full sun or semi-shade. Will grow on a Northerly wall
Pruning: Type 2

Name: Clematis 'William Kennett'
Hardy: Fully hardy
Height: 3 metres (10ft)
Flowers: Raised in 1875 by H. Cobbet in England. Lilac-blue flowers with dark red anthers. 
Leaves: Mid-green
Position: Full sun or semi-shade. Will grow on a Northerly wall
Pruning: Type 2
