OCTOBER IN THE FLOWER GARDEN

ACTION NOW

SOW AND PLANT

IN FLOWER NOW

Clear leaves from the lawn and flower beds

The greatest beauty of this month is leaf colour. The deep red Virginia creeper, the bronzed beech hedges and the fiery orange of cherry trees are all at their best now.

Smaller shrubs such as dogwood, the smoke bush, acer and sumach also provide a blaze of colour.

Several climbers also provide colour well into this month including the late flowering Clematis such as 'Ernest Markham' and the berries on the Christmas Cherry.

Prune rambler roses at the beginning of the month

Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs

Lift and divide over-crowded perennials

Autumn preparation for birds and ponds

For the best sweet peas, sow them now

Autumn action for roses, annuals and spring perennials
