CLUB ROOT
(Plasmodiophora
brassicae)
DESCRIPTION
Club Root can be identified by stunted growth
especially if infected as seedlings. Discoloured leaves which wilt. Roots
are a thick distorted mass.
The
symptoms are caused because the roots are unable to function in their
normal way. The disease is a fungus within the soil, often introduced by
seedlings bought in.
TREATMENT
The only treatment is prevention. Never grow brassicas (cabbage,
cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, turnip, kohlrabi) on the same soil in any
three years.
If
the soil is acidic, reduce the acidity with a dressing of limestone the
winter before planting. The Club Root fungus prefers acidic soil.
Normally club root is bought into a
site on the roots of infected plants. For this reason it's best to grow your
brassicas from seed.
Do plant brassicas on the same
infected site for five years.
