SPUR
BLIGHT
(Didymella applanata)
A
fungus disease which infects raspberries and occasionally loganberries.
The spur blight fungus infects the plants in early Summer, although the symptoms only
appear in August.
Dark
purple blotches appear which become larger, turning silver with black
spots. All the buds on the infected stems die - sounds pretty nasty, and it is!
The
cure is prevention. Ensure that all canes which have produced fruit are
cut out as soon as the fruit is picked. If this hasn't worked, cut out all
infected canes from the base of the plant and burn them. Spray with copper
fungicide when the buds first open and again four weeks later.
