Whitehall Garden Centre, Bristol

Whitehall are one of the larger garden centres in the South West of England with a good selection of plants and a wide range of garden accessories.

This is a totally independent GardenAction review of the Whitehall Garden Centre in Whitchurch, Bristol.

PLANTS

There was a very wide range of plants at this garden centre. This allowed Whitehall to also specialise in some plants, notably conifers and acers.

The plants looked very healthy and well-watered. The whole outdoor plant area was free from litter and plant debris. In most places the aisles were wide and uncluttered.

There were plenty of signs in the outdoor plant area to help you locate the particular plants. Whitehall were unusual though because most all the signs indicated where a group of plants could be grown (shade, dry etc) rather than plant types.

This worked fine for us although it might not be the best way of letting customers find specific plants.

All hardy plants have a "no quibble" 5 year guarantee which is excellent.

The outdoor plant area has a dedicated help and information centre which is manned most of the time. Included are lots of helpful leaflets on various plants and garden techniques.

PRICES
We visited Whitehall Garden Centre in late July and they had several items in their summer sale. The sale left us confused about the prices of clematis. These started at £7.99 but some clematis were around £14. One common  clematis montana was £12.97 which was definitely very expensive. To counteract this, all clematis were in the sale at 50% off which in the end made the prices very competitive.

The apple trees at £19.99 were very good value because they looked to be 3 year old trees. At the time of our visit there was a special offer on the Evergreen Complete, two packs for £10, which is great value for money.

Overall then, the prices at Whitehall garden centre are competitive.

Rose, 3 litre pot £7.49 upwards
Common shrub (e.g. potentilla) £6.99
Clematis £7.99 upwards (see note above)
Potted fruit tree (various rootstocks) £19.99 (upwards)
Growmore, branded, 4kg £3.99
Growmore, branded, 1kg £1.99
Miracle Gro, soluble plant food, 1kg £4.99
Evergreen Complete Lawn, 100 sq m £8.49 (see note above)
