WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN FOR
AUGUST WEEK 3

Susan Explains Discouraging Cats
Cats often use "next door" as their toilet area and if you are "next door" that's not good news. Number one tried and trusted cat prevention method is to get a dog! Unfortunately we can't all do that.
Ultra sonic devices seem to be the next most successful method. They give out a high frequency noise which only cats can hear and they don't like it. Google it, models are around £20 to £30.

PIC OF RIPE ONION Onions
Onions should be ripening now and many will be ready for harvest. The signs to look for are foliage which has bent naturally to the ground and a shrivelled stem from the top of the onion. These onions are ripe and will store well.
If the stem above the top of the onion is not shrivelled, then they probably will not store well so use these first.

Pull the onions, hopefully on a warm sunny day, and leave them on dry ground in the sun for a few hours. Clean off any soil and then hang them in an airy frost-free shed. Hang them by their stems from a line of rope. Depending on the variety, they can store for up to 4 months.

New Lawns
A new lawn can be sown or laid in September to October but there is lots of preparation before that. Now is the time for those preparations. Turf or seed? Either way you need to select the correct source and in the case of turf, order it.

The ground needs to be prepared well in advance and this can often involve hard work. Rather than outline the tasks here involved in laying a new lawn, we refer you to our very detailed article which can be found by clicking here.
