WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN FOR
AUGUST WEEK 4
|
Susan Explains Summer Pruning Wisteria
August is a good time to summer prune your wisteria. Simply cut back all the shoots
to 15cm (6in) from their main stem. The only exception to this is where you want to
train the stem in a particular direction. Don't prune these stem, let them grow
where you want them and eventually they will turn into a main trunk of the wisteria.

Prepare for a New Lawn
A lawn takes pride of place in most gardens and a new lawn involves a lot of effort.
September and October are good months for laying or sowing a new lawn but preparation should
begin in late August.
First you need to decide if you will be using turf or sowing from seed. Seed
is cheaper but more time-consuming.
pros and cons of each method in great detail.
Next you need to clear the site of existing weeds then dig and level it. All
time-consuming work. Don't forget to order the turf / seed well in advance. You will need to
research what type of grass you want depending on how it will be used. All these points are
considered in the link in the above paragraph.
Compost
Take a careful look at your compost heap this week, this is the last time you will have to
correct any problems ready for spreading it next spring.
This article gives
lots of information. If the compost heap is slimy and not breaking down then it is either
too wet (cover with carpet or plastic now) or maybe it does not have enough coarse material.
If this is the case add straw, hedge clippings or similar coarse material.
Whatever the state of your compost heap, it will always appreciate being
turned over with a fork to let air in. Air will speed up the composting process.
