Message: It depends on the area you live in; not much can be planted in terms of vegetables, except perhaps some spring cabbage if there is any left in the garden centres. However we have just planted 300 onions of various types suitable for overwintering, broad beans, overwintering peas, and have planted up pak choi, winter lettuce, mizuna, rhubarb and a variety of spring greens, cabbages, and sprouting broccoli that were started from seeds earlier in the year, around September. But it is milder than normal at the moment, so I am still picking raspberries, oca, spinach, lettuce, and the other winter vegetables like kale, cabbage, leeks, parsnip.

Message: You can grow herbs from seed. There's lots available through garden catalogues. You'll have a lot of plants to share with friends. Best wait until springtime. Even if they germinate in winter, plants are sensitive to day length and will not move much.
